The education and information initiative was launched by the European Lung Foundation (ELF) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS).

‘Healthy Lungs for Life’ focuses on measures to strengthen the lungs and reduce risk factors. These include, in particular, smoking and air pollution in connection with climate change.

VCM Group organises

Healthy lungs and a healthy environment - that's what everyone needs, not just runners. The VCM Group is therefore delighted to be organising the ‘Take the active option’ run at the ERS Congress 2024 for the European Lung Foundation. All those interested in running are welcome.

Monika Gappa, President of the ERS: ‘Impaired lung function can lead to a variety of health problems that can significantly impair quality of life. Respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) are widespread and can begin at a young age’.

The congress is running!

Accompanying this year's ERS Congress for Lung Research with around 20,000 lung specialists, there will be the ‘Lung Run’ as well as free lung tests on the Giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater and ‘School Days’ with tests for the early detection of lung problems.

7 and 8 September: ‘Public Days’ at the Giant Ferris Wheel Square

On the weekend of 7 - 8 September, anyone interested can have their lung function tested free of charge using spirometry at the Giant Ferris Wheel Square in Vienna's Prater. These are simple tests to assess the performance of the lungs. They can help to recognise respiratory diseases at an early stage and provide an indication of how each individual can promote their own lung health. Important measures to strengthen the lungs are just as much a focus as the reduction of risk factors: these include smoking and air pollution in particular. You can find additional information on spirometry here.

Mobile test stations promote early detection among pupils

On 9 and 10 September, there will be focus campaigns at selected Viennese schools. Several hundred pupils will have the opportunity to have their lung function measured free of charge at mobile test stations. They will also learn about the importance of lung health in a fun way through quizzes and workshops. Behaviour in childhood already influences our lung health in later life and it is therefore all the more important to develop an awareness of this at an early age.

Public workshop at the ERS congress

Led by ERS President Professor Monika Gappa and ELF Youth Group Chair Ed Powell, a workshop open to the public on Wednesday 11 September will discuss how to ensure that children's lung health is placed higher on the political and public health agenda.
