Wiener Linien - We Keep Vienna Moving!

More than 45,000 runners from over 120 nations, hundreds of thousands of fans – and public transport right in the middle. In 2025, the starting number also serves as a valid ticket for all public transport within the city area from 2 hours before until 6 hours after the start.

On one hand, runners and spectators must be transported to the start and to cheer along the 42.195-kilometer course. On the other hand, many bus and tram lines along the route are rerouted or shortened.

600 Information Boards Inform the Passengers

A little over 42 kilometers of route across Vienna also means changes for buses and trams. Separate timetables and service plans are created for the affected lines. Due to the many line divisions and detours, this is quite a challenging task.

About one week before the marathon, the colleagues from passenger information install approximately 600 information boards at all affected stops. This ensures that all passengers are informed well in advance of any detours or restrictions, allowing them to plan an alternative route.

Precise Coordination with Other Response Teams

To ensure that the trains—especially at the hotspot stations Reichsbrücke, Stadion, and Rathausplatz—run on schedule, employees from the metro supervision are stationed at the respective stops. They help passengers reach their desired meeting point by maintaining oversight and quickly dispatching the train so that the next one can arrive.

Once all the runners have finished, does that mean the work for Wiener Linien is done? Not quite. To ensure that tram and bus drivers know when they can resume their usual routes, precise coordination with the police, operational supervision, and the control center is required.
